GAB SNES Final Results

Topic 180's Ratings:

Dolucky's A-League Soccer - 100% (2)
Lufia and the Fortress of Doom - 60% (6)
Scooby-Doo Mystery - 50% (4)
Wizard of Oz, The - 50% (1)

I was happy to see that for the SNES revote topics, the vote totals were generally in line with what they were initially, quashing any fears that lower vote totals might skew the results. The scores remained mostly the same for most of the games, though Scooby-Doo Mystery did improve quite a bit.

And now, for everyone's favourite, stats!

GAB Stats for SNES:

- We rated 1061 games across 180 topics. It took about 7 years all told.
- The total number of games should have been 1068, which suggests 7 games got rated twice. Oops!
- Of the 1061 games rated, 369 (34.8%) were in the high range, 358 (33.7%) were in the mid range, and 334 (31.5%) were in the low range. It's surprising how close to even it is!
- Of the 1061 games, 97 of them began with the word "Super".
- Of these "Super" games, 46 (47.4%) were in the high range, 31 (32.0%) were in the mid range, and 20 (20.6%) were in the low range.
- This clearly demonstrates that games that start with the word Super are statistically more likely to be good than games that don't. Not false advertising!
- 62 users gave 313 SRs to 139 separate games.
- The most voted on game was Chrono Trigger, with 19 votes. Super Mario World was second, with 18. Chrono Trigger also had the most SRs, with 9.
- Super Mario World had the most votes for a game with a 100% score, with 18.
- Mario's Time Machine had the most votes for a game with a 0% score, with 9.

Closing Thoughts:

When I started GAB, I never thought we'd even make it through all of NES, let alone now have completed 3 full systems and be on to the next generation. The continued support from the community has been incredible, so thank you all for that. This could never exist without all of you.

It's always a bit sad to come to the end of a GAB series, because in some sense it feels like the end of an era. Even though I wanted to explore the library thoroughly, it's hard to believe that I may never play another new SNES game. Of course, this isn't really the end, while building the list for GAB I came across many games that looked interesting but would not have been playable by english-speaking audiences, but new fan translations continue to release every month so they may one day be available. And I'm sure for most people who didn't try to play every game they may have heard about some interesting games through GAB that they'd like to try out one day. The SNES will always live on as long as there are people who enjoy its games.

GAB SNES #180 - Revote Topic 2

Last Topic's Ratings:

Art of Fighting - 13% (8)
Chessmaster, The - 75% (4)
Dragon Quest 5 - 100% (6) (2 SR)
F-Zero - 79% (12) (2 SR)

I was so happy to see the great turnout for this topic. I know some people had expressed reservations about the revote topics that maybe not many people would vote or something, and to be honest I had my own worries as well, but you all really came through. By the way, just in case anyone is confused, F-Zero and Dragon Quest 5 retained their SRs that people had given previously, which is why they have them despite no one specifically assigning one in the previous topic.

Games for this topic:

Dolucky's A-League Soccer
Lufia and the Fortress of Doom
Scooby-Doo Mystery
Wizard of Oz, The

And here we have it, the very last batch of games for the SNES GAB. Thanks to everyone for sticking it out with me for so long. In the event that you're not tired of GAB yet, we've still got GAB for PS1, and GAB for N64 begins today as well. There's still a long road ahead for GAB, but before that I'd like to thank you all for coming along for this crazy ride through the SNES library.

Last Topic's Ratings:

Funaki Masakatsu Hybrid Wrestler - 100% (2) (1 SR)
Kidou Butouden G Gundam - 75% (2)
Mr. Do - 38% (4)
Nice de Shot - 0% (2)
Rendering Ranger R2 - 69% (8)
Super Air Diver 2 - 0% (3)
Tecmo Super NBA Basketball - 50% (3)

Between having a lot of votes, a hidden gem, and seeing all the back and forth on RR2, I couldn't have asked for a better ending to the SNES GAB. I'd like to offer my sincerest thanks to all who have participated in GAB over the years, this project could never have existed without all of you.

Games for this topic:

Art of Fighting, The
Chessmaster, The
Dragon Quest 5
F-Zero

But our story isn't quite over yet. As for previous consoles, we have the revote topics, where a few games were nominated to be re-rated (and we also have the last handful of games that AxemRedRanger dug up rounding out the list). As is always the case, whatever rating they get this time is final, regardless of how it relates to the previous rating. Although I can't enforce this in any way, it's my hope that more people will play these games or they'll put more time into them than they otherwise might. Since there were two RPGs nominated and I feel it's kind of unfair to force you to rate 2 RPGs at once, I've opted to split this into two topics, the rest of the games will appear 2 weeks from now.

Nishinji Pachinko 3 - 0% (1)
Super International Cricket - 0% (1)
Super Robot Wars EX - 100% (1)
Wing Commander - 0% (2)

Another quiet topic, though I'm hoping we'll get more turnout for this one.

Games for this topic:

Funaki Masakatsu Hybrid Wrestler
Kidou Butouden G Gundam
Mr. Do
Nice de Shot
Rendering Ranger R2
Super Air Diver 2
Tecmo Super NBA Basketball

Here we are at the final topic for GAB About Games for SNES. It's been a long road (about 7 years, to be precise), but my list of games is finally exhausted, and so is the portion of the SNES library that is playable to an english speaking audience.

But of course, as every journey comes to an end, another one begins! I can now announce that GAB About Games for N64 will be starting on July 22nd! Mark your calendars! Find some N64 controllers with sticks that still work! Cut those tabs so you can play import games! With N64's small library, it won't take long to go through everything, so you won't want to miss a beat.

But before that, we've got a handful of games left to rate. We've got both the last US-released game for SNES here as well as arguably the system's technical pinnacle. There are also translations available for Hybrid Wrestler, G Gundam, and Nice de Shot.

Last Topic's Ratings:

Galaxy Wars - 50% (1)
Last Bible 3 - 100% (1)
Power Monger - 25% (2)
Super F1 Circus Gaiden - 100% (1)
Super Slap Shot - 50% (2)
Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer - 100% (1)

I guess the one good thing about these topics that don't have many votes is it does make the votes very easy to count up.

Games for this topic:

Bishin Densetsu Zoku
Libble Rabble
NCAA Football
Nishinji Pachinko 3
Super International Cricket
Super Robot Wars EX
Wing Commander

Astute counters might notice that there's 7 games here instead of 6. That's because I have 14 games left, the next topic will be the last one. After more than 7 years, we're almost ready to wrap up GAB About Games for SNES. In the meantime, there's a translation available for Nishinji Pachinko 3 and Super Robot Wars EX.

Pinball Dreams - 50% (3)
Sports Illustrated Championship Football and Baseball - 0% (1)
TKO Super Championship Boxing - 100% (1)
World Cup USA 94 - 0% (1)

We came pretty close in the last topic to the nightmare scenario where I'm the only one who rates anything for a week. It'll probably happen eventually, but I'm hoping for better turnout this time.

Games for this topic:

Galaxy Wars
Last Bible 3
Power Monger
Super F1 Circus Gaiden
Super Slap Shot
Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer

There's a translation available for Last Bible 3.

Last Topic's Ratings:

ESPN Baseball Tonight - 100% (1)
Hurricanes - 50% (1)
Shin Megami Tensei If - 75% (2)
Urban Strike - 50% (4)
Wagan Paradise - 75% (2)
Wedding Peach - 0% (1)

This was a pretty highly rated topic even if there weren't a lot of votes. Urban Strike also would have been a squiggle bracket game under the new rules that the PS1 topic uses.

Games for this topic:

Crayon Shin-Chan 2
Kikou Keisatsu: Metal Jack
Pinball Dreams
Sports Illustrated Championship Football and Baseball
TKO Super Championship Boxing
World Cup USA 94

I originally thought topic 175 would be the last one, but due to requests we have a couple more weeks to go. Unfortunately, I do have a somewhat unbalanced set of genres left though, so this week we have quite a lot of sports games, there shouldn't be this many in subsequent weeks. I really hope Metal Jack is a good game.

Last Topic's Ratings:

Mahou Poipoi Poitto - 50% (1)
Mark Davis The Fishing Master - 0% (1)
Monopoly - 50% (3)
NBA Give 'N Go - 100% (1)
Troddlers - 75% (2)

Not a lot of votes this time. I wonder if people who don't visit GAB that often don't check the topic if they don't recognize any of the games in the topic title, not knowing there's 3 more. I always try to pick the 3 games I think will be the most well-known, but sometimes games I think people will know turn out to be more obscure than I thought. Oh well, there's only so much I can do when we get down to the end.

Games for this topic:

ESPN Baseball Tonight
Hurricanes
Shin Megami Tensei If
Urban Strike
Wagan Paradise
Wedding Peach

There's a translation available for Shin Megami Tensei If and Wedding Peach. I'm hoping Wagan Paradise will be more playable without knowing too much Japanese compared to the others but my hopes aren't super high.

Pink Goes to Hollywood - 0% (2)
Smash Tennis - 50% (1)
Tenshi no Uta - 50% (1)

Mickey's Ultimate Challenge would have been a squiggle bracket game if we did those for the SNES GAB. Granted, such games are actually much more rare than I initially expected, so perhaps it's not a big deal.

Games for this topic:

Aretha
Mahou Poipoi Poitto
Mark Davis The Fishing Master
Monopoly
NBA Give 'N Go
Troddlers

Glory of Heracles 4 - 100% (1)
Kunio's Dodge Ball - 75% (2)
Super Battletank 2 - 50% (3)
Super F1 Circus 3 - 75% (2)

It's interesting to me that the Super F1 Circus series has exactly one game in high range, one game in moderate range, and one game in low range, and it also goes in order. I wonder if any other series does this?

Games for this topic:

Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero
Mickey's Ultimate Challenge
Nishinji Pachinko 2
Pink Goes to Hollywood
Smash Tennis
Tenshi no Uta

I feel like I should probably stop saying this because it always ends badly, but Shibibinman looks like a cool game. Also, there are translations available for Nishinji Pachinko 2 and Tenshi no Uta.

Majin Tensei 2 - 100% (1)
Super Noah's Ark 3D - 17% (3)

Not many votes last time, though I guess it's kind of inevitable when we're getting down to the end and the translations are very new.

Games for this topic:

Bing Bing Bingo
Genghis Khan 2
Glory of Heracles 4
Kunio's Dodge Ball
Super Battletank 2
Super F1 Circus 3

I won't lie, I'm not sorry to come to the end of the 8/16-bit RotK games. Nothing against the series really, but I feel like I've rated basically the same game like 20 times. Also, there's a translation available for Glory of Heracles 4, Kunio's Dodge Ball, and Super F1 Circus 3.

Winter Gold - 50% (3)
Wizardry 6 - 25% (2)

Very solid ratings for a topic this late in the series. It just goes to show you should always stick it out until the very end.

Games for this topic:

Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus
Cosmo Gang: The Puzzle
Dino Dini's Soccer
Ihatov Monogatari
Majin Tensei 2
Super Noah's Ark 3D

I've wanted to play Ihatov Monogatari for a while, so it's lucky that a translation for it recently came out. There's also a translation available for Majin Tensei 2.

Star Fox - 86% (11)
UFO Kamen Yakisoban - 0% (1)

It was interesting to see the back and forth on Starfox, I enjoy our discussions of popular or influential games to see how the opinion on them shifts over time.

Games for this topic:

Arkanoid: Doh It Again
Gon
Mickey's Tokyo Disneyland Adventure
Super Naxat Open
Winter Gold
Wizardry 6

A few interesting games this time, we finally get to play the game that Gon from Tekken 3 comes from (I'm aware there's also a manga), and I'm quite looking forward to trying out Mickey's Tokyo Disneyland Adventure given my fondness for other 16-bit Disney games. Speaking of, I often struggle over whether or not to translate the titles of games where the english title is obvious (the Japanese name of this game is Mickey No Tokyo Disneyland Daibouken). Maybe I set the precedent when I translated Magical Quest 3's title. Also, there's a translation available for Super Naxat Open and Wizardry 6.

Wow, this topic was pretty painful. I can't remember the last time we had a topic with 4 0% scores. I wonder if an all B topic will ever happen? Hopefully not, I do try to make sure every topic has something I've heard of before.

Games for this topic:

Beauty and the Beast
Jikkyou Power Pro Wrestling '96
Lupin the Third
Silva Saga 2

There's a translation available for Silva Saga 2. And no, I'm not really sure how we managed to get this far without doing the original Star Fox.

NFL Quarterback Club - 50% (2)
Super Battleship - 0% (2)
Super F1 Circus 2 - 50% (3)
Terminator, The - 0% (4)

I'm actually kind of shocked Cho Aniki got 5 votes, particularly considering it's a spinoff game. Granted, that's probably the least shocking thing about Cho Aniki.

Games for this topic:

Ashita no Joe
Carrier Aces
Pit Fighter
PTO 2
Super Back to the Future 2
Super F1 Circus

I thought we had actually done Super F1 Circus already when we did the sequel, but it turns out we hadn't, so we might as well fix that now while the sequel is fresh in everyone's minds. Also, there are translations available for Ashita no Joe and Super Back to the Future 2. Back to the Future 2 actually looks like it could be decent, could this be the good Back to the Future game we've been waiting for?

Cyber Knight is quickly becoming one of my favourite finds of the later GAB topics. It's crazy how many games we completely missed out on here in the US. I hope someday some of the better ones will start to become known among western collectors.

Games for this topic:

Daikaijuu Monogatari
Hokuto no Ken 7
Marko's Magic Football
Onita Atsushi: FMW
Super Play Action Football
X Zone

I've actually wanted to play Daikaijuu Monogatari for a long time, and after the last few weeks I feel like I've earned it. Also, we have two games here referring to the two different sports that are both called "Football", which is a funny coincidence.

Cosmo Gang is one of those games that I hope people will go back and try out after the GAB topics are over, it's very accessible even to foreign audiences, and as a follow-up to a very well-known game it feels like a lost piece of history.

Games for this topic:

Air Cavalry
Hana no Keiji
Hong Kong 97
Manchester United Soccer
Record of Lodoss War
Super Morph

Hong Kong 97 is the closest I've ever come to vetoing a game from GAB, but the completionist in me forces me to allow it. Let's just get this over with so I don't have to keep seeing it on the list. In brighter news, there's a translation available for Record of Lodoss War.

There's a translation available for V-Gundam, though it doesn't really seem like it would be needed. Do note that there are two Cosmo Gang games, this is not the puzzle one.
